Frequently Asked Questions

Iridium Flares

show

Does the app take Daylight saving time into account?

Yes.

The app is stuck at the "loading location" message, what can I do?

If you're inside a building or a place with a lot of tall buildings that block the GPS signal: try and get a clear view of the sky. If you've set the accuracy to very accurate (low value): change it to less accurate (higher value).

My application doesn't work anymore, what can I do?

Delete it and let iTunes reinstall your application.

Why does the compass sometimes points to the wrong direction?

The compass in the iPhone and iPad isn't very accurate. To re-calibrate the compass you can wave the device in a figure 8 motion.

What's the difference between Intensity and Centre Intensity?

Intensity is the intensity at your location, Centre Intensity is the intensity at the flare centre. The Flare Centre is the point on the flares track which is nearest to your location, so if you want to get the best possible view, that's the place to be. You can see the flares track on the map at the flare details.

Why can't I view daytime flares on the map?

Flares are downloaded from Heavens-Above.com and that website doesn't provide the necessary details about daytime flares to show them on the map.

Why doesn't the app display notifications in iOS 5?

iOS 5 doesn't allow local notifications by default, you'll have to turn them on in Settings -> Notifications -> IridiumFlares.

Why is the direction of the flare on the info screen different than the direction to the flare center on the map?

The map shows your location, the flare center and the path of the flare. The direction to the flare center isn't automatically the direction to look at the flare itself.

Why is the app missing dates and times?

Due to a change of the Heavens-Above website the app stopped working correctly. We've already created an update for this issue and submitted it to Apple, we're now waiting for their approval.

The app crashes at startup, what can I do about it?

We're aware of this problem with version 2.0 Update your app to version 2.0.1 or higher and the problem should disappear.

My camera does not appear to be in the camera list, but it is listed in your app description. How can I select my camera?

In the camera list there is a refresh button at the top, if you press it the app will start loading new cameras.

A full-frame camera has less dof than a crop-sensor, your app is wrong?

A full-frame camera only has a smaller dof than a crop camera if they have the same field of view. If you compare those cameras in the app, with the same settings, you have a different field of view for each camera. In that case the full-frame camera has the bigger dof.

I have a crop-camera, do I need to set the lens value to mm * cropfactor?

No, if you choose your camera in the camera list the app does that conversion for you.

What is the Circle of Confusion?

The Circle of Confusion (CoC) is almost impossible to explain in non-technical terms. You shouldn't worry about it if you're just beginning as a photographer. The CoC is used to indicate the sensor size of the camera and calculate the depth of field.

What is the Hyper Focal Distance?

The Hyper Focal Distance is the distance beyond which all objects are acceptably sharp if you focus on that distance. You can also tap the Hyper Focal Distance, then the app sets that distance as the Focus Point.

How can we see in co-op mode wich player made an error?

The only indication is the pulsing red ring that indicates on which marker an error was made, so you'll have to keep an eye on each other by yourself. Note: this can be a wrongfully touched marker or a marker that has been released while it shouldn't have been released.
